The Zhaotai International Center recently organized an acceptance meeting for the application demonstration project titled "Research on Improving Building Operational Energy Efficiency and Health Performance Based on the Whole Lifecycle Carbon Reduction" (2018YFE0106100), which is part of the key special project "International Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation between Governments" under the National Key Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The meeting resulted in the selection of Zhaotai Group's "Zhaotai Financial Center" as the National Key R&D Program Application Demonstration Base of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Wu Chen, Chief Architect and Chief Planner of Beijing Architectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd., has led the design of the Zhaotai Financial Center. For the project's double carbon and green building consultancy, Lin Borong, Vice Dean of the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University, Changjiang Distinguished Professor and Doctoral supervisor, Specially Appointed Professor of Changjiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education and Director of the Key Laboratory of Ecological Planning and Green Building of the Ministry of Education, has been employed.

Professor Lin Borong attended the meeting as a consultant expert on the design team. The evaluation experts presented at the meeting were Hao Jun, Vice Chief Engineer of China Urban Construction Research Institute Co., Ltd., Wan Shuie, Chief Engineer of Beijing Institute of Architectural Design and Research, and Gao Yan, Professor and Ph.D. supervisor at Beijing University of Architecture. The meeting was attended by Zhang Yang, Zhaotai Group's Chief Architect, Shao Xiaofei, Vice President of the Engineering Management Center, and Zhang Tong, the Head of the Planning and Design Department.

01 Project Overview

"Zhaotai Financial Center" was conceptualized by Wu Chen, the Chief Architect and Chief Planner of Beijing Strategic Scientists and Beijing Institute of Architectural Design and Research Co., Ltd. In addition, Professor Lin Borong, a renowned dual-carbon and green building consultant from Tsinghua University School of Architecture, was appointed to provide his expertise to the project.

The construction project is situated in the prime area of Financial Street in Beijing and serves as a significant development project for the region. Its primary purpose is to function as a world-class, top-tier office building for international financial activities. The project covers a land area of 28,000 square meters and boasts a total construction area of 119,936.8 square meters. Of this, the above-ground area makes up 57,970 square meters, while the remaining 61,966.8 square meters is underground construction. There are six high-quality office buildings situated above ground, with a height range of 24 to 36 meters. These buildings consist of 5 to 8 stories, each having standard floor heights ranging from 4.2 to 4.35 meters. There are three underground levels, with the first two designated for commercial use and the third for parking. The integrated design of this project includes the connection between the B and C entrances of Metro Line 19. It is scheduled to commence operations in 2025.

02 Promotion of high-quality low-carbon building clusters through demonstration creation
During the meeting, the panel of experts was briefed on the technical proposal for the "Zhaotai Financial Center". They unanimously agreed that the proposal was groundbreaking and had well-defined objectives. The technical routes suggested were practical and feasible, showcasing innovation and leadership. Moreover, it is a zero-carbon emission building project that holds immense potential for replication and promotion.
The National Key R&D Program is a science and technology initiative overseen by the Ministry of Science and Technology. It is designed to address major scientific and technological challenges in support of economic and social development objectives. This program emphasizes extensive and diversified scientific research collaboration, resulting in high-level scientific innovation. As such, it forms a crucial pillar of China's highly sought-after science and technology innovation strategy. The Zhaotai Financial Center project has been approved as a demonstration base for its excellence in lowering the energy usage and carbon emissions of buildings.

03 Innovations in science and technology have improved building technology, promoting further development
The Zhaotai Financial Center project is driven by the goal of achieving zero-carbon/low-carbon emissions and proposes six strategies for implementing carbon reduction and park's low-carbon technologies in B1 (Building 1). These include reducing carbon emissions at the source, improving efficiency and quality, optimizing energy usage, collaborating with industry/regional partners, using low-carbon high-performance building materials, and employing green carbon sinks. To achieve these goals, the project has implemented a range of low-carbon technologies. These include a high-performance external enclosure structure system, a high-performance air conditioning system, and a partially photovoltaic (storage) DC frequency conversion multi-unit. The building also features a photovoltaic integration design, full electrification, intelligent two-way charging piles, distributed energy storage power supply system, DC lighting, automatic regulation of the lighting environment, and a new type of environmental control system. A new low-carbon technology in environmental control systems has been developed, which prioritizes health and comfort, on-demand operation, and localized space. It also includes advanced intelligent health operation and maintenance methods and comprehensive management platforms that utilize environmental monitoring data.

Once completed, the Zhaotai Financial Center will be the first building complex in the core area of Beijing to achieve the highest domestic three-star green building certification and serve as a demonstration of zero/low carbon emissions. By constructing a highly flexible energy system for buildings, deeply integrating buildings with transportation, and achieving 100% local consumption of renewable energy, while ensuring that the building quality and indoor health performance reach advanced levels both domestically and internationally, the designed energy consumption of Buildings 1-6 of the Zhaotai Financial Center (B1~B6) will be reduced by 15% to 25% based on the General Code for Building Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Utilization (GB 55015-2021) at a low cost. The carbon emissions of Buildings 1-6 will be reduced by over 35% based on the same standard, with an expected target of zero carbon emissions for Building 1 and low-carbon emissions for the park.

Aimed to achieve the dual carbon targets, the construction industry is now on a path towards green and low-carbon transformation and development. As a forerunner in low-carbon construction, Zhaotai Group aims to create a high-standard zero-carbon park following its approval as a demonstration base. To achieve this, the company will focus on cultivating the building technology business sector, strengthening its R&D team, and driving innovation in the technology system for transforming building energy use. Based on intelligent technology innovation and equipment upgrades, Zhaotai will conduct zero-carbon technology R&D, providing more efficient solutions for building construction and leading innovation and development in the field of building technology. Zhaotai Group, as a pioneer in the field of low-carbon construction, sees the opportunity of being approved as a demonstration base as a chance to create a high-standard zero-carbon park. The company aims to focus on cultivating the building technology business sector by strengthening its R&D team and innovating the technology system for transforming building energy use. With a focus on intelligent technology innovation and equipment upgrades, Zhaotai Group will enable building construction and provide more efficient solutions through zero-carbon technology R&D. We aim to drive innovation and progress in the building technology field by pioneering zero-carbon technologies that empower efficient and sustainable construction practices.
